Getting to Know Your Home

GETTING TO KNOW YOUR GLENULLIN HOME, THANKS TO HERTIAGE LOTTERY FUND!

The people of Glenullin, 3 miles from Garvagh in the NE Sperrins have had the good luck to inherit a beautiful part of the earth, the glen itself and the old raised bog in its midst. They now have a unique opportunity to get to know their part of the world: its flowers, plants, birds, animals and ancient sites.

They have just received £32,500 from the Heritage Lottery Fund for a new one year project Getting to Know Your Home. The aim of the project is to hand down the knowledge held by the older people who know the place like the back of their hand; where to find Dracula’s Grave, bog asphodel, banks of primroses and hidden badger tracks.  And in passing it on they hope to engender a respect, appreciation and will to protect this heritage so that their children can indeed inherit an earth that means something to them.

The Heritage Lottery funded project invites people from near and far into the glen to share its natural and historic sites and come together to protect this unique heritage.

They will get a chance to walk the edges of a beautiful old raised bog, to see herons rising from its blanket of bell heather and marvel at the meandering tracks of a nighttime badger. The 1 year project will also train Guides in the natural and cultural history of the glen, publish a Field Guide of the flora and fauna of the 4 seasons, work with the local school children on a Performance Piece, collect Folklore and publish collected Stories. There will be a permanent Exhibition of photographs of the glen installed in the Resource Center.

People can access all these natural and historic sites via the two Way Marked Trails already in the glen and an additional trail will pinpoint where to find these hidden treasures: glorious displays of blackthorn blossom, foxgloves etc.

Getting to Know Your Home is a project of the Glenullin and Agivey Conservation and Development Group and Sheila Fairon has been appointed as Coordinator of the project starting this summer. She said ‘It is so timely to be starting this project, the chance to act locally. As you know from TV coverage looking after habitats such as the bog is a key issue internationally and we get to play our part, to be given a renewed stewardship of this part of the earth. The Heritage Lottery grant will enable people near and far to engage with, learn about and become protectors of this beautiful and unique landscape.

And James Mclaughlin who leads walks in the glen and has a lifetime of knowledge of the landscape says ‘We welcome people here and are grateful to Coleraine and Limavady Councils for all the help they have given us. We look forward to working together on this project’
