Fun things to do

Try and find where the Glenullin bog is on an Ordinance Survey of Northern Ireland map, Sheet 8. The words Glenulin Bog are not written on the map but by good detective work you can guess where it is from the clues given in 'Where is the bog?'

And you may have bog land in your own area. Ask teachers and family if there is a bog in the countryside near you and perhaps you could arrange a school visit? Bogs are dangerous places because of the pools and soggy conditions so never go there on your own or with friends.  Always get adults who know about bogs to go with you.

You can find out about bogs in other countries by searching on the internet. Because of the layers of plant and animal life laid down in bogs over thousands of years they hold secrets about our past climate etc. And bogs have been used for many purposes. In Ireland and Great Britain bogs were cut for fuel and are presently being raided by garden centres to make compost for gardens.

And there are probably some good folk stories about people who got lost on bogs etc which you may be able to hear from older people in your area. Do ask them if they know any good stories!

For older children you could look up the poem Bogland by the Irish poet Seamus Heaney from his book Door into the Dark which gives a wonderful description of bogs.
