Animals living around the bog |
Foxes, hares, rabbits and Irish stoats have been seen in the area around the bog. Otter spraint (droppings) have been found in the northern part of the bog near the Glenullin Water.
The bog vegetation of heathers and mosses is not an ideal habitat for these animals so they tend to keep to the surrounding fields rather than venture into its centre.
There are no fish in the small pools of acidic water, nor are there any snails. However you can see insects such as dragonflies hovering above the bog and butterflies flitting about in the summer months.
Curlew, snipe and lapwing nest in the bog. They come up from the coastal marshes in March to nest and leave again in August. They feed on the soft, boggy ground using their long beaks. And their long legs keep them above the soggy wet ground!
